The purpose of the encoder strip is to help the ink station or carriage assembly identify its position over the paper using a linear sensor.

Tech Note:
Installation of the encoder strip requires the deskjet or officejet printer to be dissasembled.
Torques bits may be required to replace the encoder strip. We sell the tools required.
